Being inducted into the hall for meritorious service to the sport of bowling in the Buffalo area were Marion Alexander, Lois Mahaffey and James Zebehazy.
Johnson’s name is well known in the local, national, and international worlds of bowling. Liz was named both the Collegiate and Rookie Bowler of the Year in her 1992-1993 season at Morehead State University. In addition, she won the Alberta Crowe WIBC “Star of Tomorrow” Award that same year. U.S. National Amateur Bowling Champion in 1993, Liz was a member of TEAM USA through 1994 and 1995, during that time winning 2 gold medals and a silver medal in international competition, before re-joining Team USA for 2008.
Michael Faliero Jr. has been an active league bowler for 30 years. A former collegiate standout at Erie Community College, Mike was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame in 2001. The New York State Masters champion in 1991, Mike has two George Obenauer Masters Titles, in 1990 and in 2007, and also has 2 runner-up finishes, in 1988 and 1993. A top player nationally on the amateur circuit, Mike was a member of the WTC Grand Champions Team, has won and cashed in numerous high roller events over the years, and was a member of Team USA in 1996-1997.
Doris Hanes has been a sanctioned bowler in the Buffalo area for over 25 years. For at least 20 of those years she averaged over 200. She was the Buffalo Women’s Bowling Association Queens Tournament Champion in 1985, in addition to several City titles. With a high series of 786, she also has five 300 games to her credit. She has been a member and officer of many classic leagues in the Buffalo area throughout the years, and herself was a Team USA finalist in 1991.
Gary Kinyon has been an active league bowler since 1982, participating in 29 ABC National Tournaments and 10 ABC Masters Tournaments in which he qualified twice for match play. He has also bowled in 3 ABC Senior Masters Tournaments and qualified 29th among 324 bowlers in 2002. The Scratch All Events champion at the New York State tournament in 1991, Gary has also participated in over 20 Buffalo City Tournaments and has won 4 Scratch Championships, and was runner-up twice in the Obenauer Masters, in both 1984 and 2000. Gary was the BBA Bowler of the Year in 1989, and with his four Lockport Bowler of the Year awards, he also joined that Hall in 1994.
Michael “Mickey” Nagy has been an active member of the bowling community for over 56 years. Mickey is past president of the Buffalo Bowling Association and became a life member in 2001. He was a member of many committees while on the BBA Board, also serving as a volunteer for the Greater Buffalo USBC Association, is a certified lane inspector, and serveing on the association’s Lane Certification Committee for several years.
As a player, He has participated in over 30 national tournaments, holding an average of 190.34, and was listed in the Top 10 Averages from 1970 to 1979. Mickey was on the 1st place Buffalo City Team, won the City Doubles and All Events Title, and in 2007 he won the Greater Buffalo City Singles event to complete a clean sweep of all association championship titles. In 2005, Mickey won the Class AA Division of the Stan Kowalski Senior Singles Tournament
Leading the 2008 class in the meritorious services category is Marion Alexander, Marion has been a tireless worker for the sport of bowling for many years. A sanctioned bowler for more than 60 years, she has recorded a high series of 665, and a high game of 277. A member of the Buffalo Women’s Bowling Association Board of Directors for many years, Marion served on several of their committees. She was a board member of the 600 Club and worked on many of their committees. Currently she is a volunteer for the Greater Buffalo USBC Association. She has been both president and secretary of various leagues over the years.
Lois Maheffey has been a sanctioned bowler for 43 years. During the 20 years she has been a volunteer and board member, she has served on many committees. She currently serves on the Greater Buffalo USBC Youth Committee and is a Youth Director. Lois has organized and worked with numerous Youth Programs in various local centers over the years and at one time worked to build the junior program at Abbott Lanes to 250 members. A member of the Erie County 600 Club, Lois has also served on their board. She has, in the past, served as vice president and president for the Thursday Night Ladies’ Classic Doubles league. Lois has a high series of 724 and a high game of 280.
Jim Zebehazy is a name long associated with bowling in both the Buffalo area and on a National level. Jim was elected an Associate Director of the BBA in 1975 and then a Director in 1977. He remained active on the board until 1983, and During that time served on various committees, including the Lane Inspection Committee. In 1983, Jim became the Northeast Field Representative for the ABC and serviced over 1000 associations in 13 states and 3 Canadian provinces. He served as a Field Rep from 1983 through 1989, at which time he became part of the ABC Executive Team and managed Field Services. Jim was then appointed Executive Director of the Young American Bowling Alliance in 1996, and started the Junior Olympic Gold National Championships, now called Junior Gold, as well as laying the groundwork for the first Youth Open Championship, which was held for the first time ever in July 2007.
The Greater Buffalo USBC elects a new class to be inducted into their hall of fame every two years. The next class will be elected in April of 2010 and the new class will be inducted in November of 2010.
