Johnson Takes Historic Obenauer Title
Cheektowaga, NY - May 21, 2009
Liz Johnson has made history several times over in her career, and Sunday she added yet another victory to that list, becoming the first woman in it's 46 year history to capture the George A. Obenauer Masters title, Sunday afternoon at AMF Airport Lanes in Cheektowaga.

Johnson, Cheektowaga, defeated Mike Mallwitz of Grand Island, 740-646 in the final three-game match to take the victory and $1,400 first place prize.

Liz needed to win two consecutive final matches to win the title out of the contender's bracket, as Mallwitz entered the finals of the double elimination format without a blemish on his record.  She won the first of two final matches by just two pins, 710-708, before taking the measure of Mallwitz in the final.

An inductee into the Greater Buffalo USBC Hall of Fame just this past December, Johnson bettered her previous best finish of second in the event, that coming to 2007 champion Mike Faliero at Transit Lanes.

Mallwitz, who earned the runner-up check of $800, completed his undefeated run into the finals by defeating Jeff Tycz, Cheektowaga, 718-700 in the winner's bracket final at the start of Sunday's action.  Mallwitz was able to hold off a third game charge which saw Tycz roll the tournament's fourth perfect 300 game of the week.

Tycz was then defeated by Johnson, 722-681, finishing in 3rd place.

Johnson averaged a staggering 246.71 in her 8 match play efforts, including back-to-back series of 806 and 815 in Friday night victories over Jessica Mamon, Williamsville, and Tony Dolan, West Seneca, respectively.

Defending champion Joe Ciccone, Cheektowaga, earned the Pete Parisi Award as qualifying leader with a tournament record 1975 8-game total in Tuesday and Wednesday night action at AMF Airport.

In addition to the first place prize in the event, Johnson also earned an expense-paid trip to the 2010 USBC Masters, to be held in Reno, Nevada next January.
