West Seneca's Dave Guindon topped yesterday's qualifying with 765

Guindon is Day Leader; Faliero Makes "Great 48" at Mini-Eliminator

The ‘Great Guindon’ rolled another big score Wednesday to lead all scoring at the Mini-Eliminator at the Orleans Hotel, Casino, and Bowling Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dave Guindon, W. Seneca, NY topped all 39 and under division players with a fine 765 on games of 228, 290 and 247 in the 2:30 squad.

In the 12 noon squad, Scott Monteleone, New Orleans, LA rolled a 734 to lead the squad. Ed Schuler, Hamilton, NJ shot 675 to lead the morning round.

In the 40-49 division, Mexico’s Rafael Gomez tossed a 723 to lead the day in the 10 a.m. squad. Jim Winklepleck, Portland, OR rolled a 677 to lead the noon squad, and Don Fowler, Overland Park, KS shot 671 to top the 2:30 list.

In the Senior group, Steve Giljim, Webster Groves, MO is the day leader with a 713 in the noon squad. Les Brosius, Centerville, VA opened the day with a 650 in the 10 a.m. squad. In the 2:30 squad, the leader was Bob Walters, Miami, FL with a 666.

656 was good enough to lead the 205 and under division. It was rolled in the 10 a.m. squad by Timothy Thompson, from Chicago. Vishal Malyah, Valley Stream, NY shot 622 in the noon squad, and Earl Laster, Anaheim, CA rolled a 602 at 2:30.

Kenny Dyar was the best Super Senior on Wednesday. Dyar, Boynton Beach, FL rolled a 691 in the 2:30 squad. Kari Schwager had the high women’s score Wednesday. Kari, Lincoln, NE shot 676 in the 2:30 squad.

FALIERO, OLSSON, GOMEZ MAKE 'GREAT 48' IN 5TH MATCH PLAY EVENT
Eight more great bowlers advanced to the ‘Great 48’ Match Play Finals Wednesday night, and only eight spots remain open. The final group will be determined tonight for Friday’s finals.

The quality of players in the finals was enhanced even more Wednesday night, with Mike Faliero, W. Seneca, New York, Andres Gomez, Orlando, Florida and Mats Olsson, Vastra Frolauda, Sweden all qualifying.

Faliero defeated Joe Holschbach, Eau Claire, Wisconsin 227-193 in the final round to advance. Gomez won his match by a single pin, defeating Mike Marks, Elmira New York 205- 204, and Olsson defeated Isaac Amkie, Mexico City 214-203. It was Olsson’s third time in the top 16.

Chad Nelson, Owatonna, Minnesota cruised to his victory over Kurt Lambert, Lindwood, Michigan 255-190, and Carl Kinyon, Lockport, New York defeated Rob Leathers, Henderson, Nevada 224-186.

Mike Rose Jr., Rochester, NewYork beat Ken Garrison, Hayward, California 212-175, Matt Barker, Bartlett, Illinois defeated Robert Piroozshad, Brooklyn, New York 226-218, and Tim McAuliffe, Staten Island, New York got by Corbet Austin, Brigham City, Utah 201-186.

All players finishing 9th - 16th earned $600, and the top eight will cash for a minimum of $1000 and will have a chance to win as much as $50,000 by winning the ‘Great 48’ Finals and then defeating the Qualifier Tournament Champion in a one-game match.

Wednesday’s field was the largest thus far, with 202 players. The ‘Great 48’ Match Play Finals begins at 9:00 a.m. Friday morning.
