captured his third greater buffalo usbc
association george a. obenauer masters
title sunday as he defeated north
tonawanda's john szczerbinski in the
championship match at amf airport lanes
in cheektowaga.
having been knocked into the elimination
bracket to start the day by
szczerbinski, cheektowaga's ciminelli would need two
victories in the 3-game total pins match
play to take the title, winning 687-662
in the first match before posting a
742-601 win in the final.
the first match of the finals went
back-and-forth as szczerbinski took a 16
pin lead after 2 games, before both
players went on a strike dispay in the
3rd game going for the championship.
szczerbinski would be stopped by two 10
pins, while ciminelli's first strike in
the 10th frame sealed the match before
he went on to a 300-259 win that would
force a second final match for the
title.
the second title match would see
ciminelli grab control of the match with
a 277 second game on the way to a
742-601 final win. his 742 would
be the highest 3-game total rolled in
match play.
szczerbinski started the day with a
one-pin victory in the final match of
the winner's bracket, defeating
ciminelli 638-637, while curtis foss
defeated mike johnson 617-601 to advance
in the elimination bracket. foss
then was defeated by ciminelli 638-591
to set up the final.
this year's
event drew 115 players to amf airport
lanes with qualifying on tuesday and
wednesday, followed by match play which
started on thursday. ciminelli was
awarded the pete parisi award as the
tournament's high qualifier.
