usa's barnes wins, hamiliton third to colombia's guerrero at world cup

wroclaw, poland - team usa's chris barnes put on a dominant performance in the final
round sunday as he claimed the 50th qubicaamf bowling world cup men's title.
entering the finals as the no. 3 seed, barnes swept the semifinal and the final,
2-0, in the best-of-three format at sky bowling center. clara guerrero of colombia
won the women's title.
in the championship match, barnes took down top seed tobias bording of germany in
consecutive games, 269-248 and 231-216. needing two strikes in the final frame for
the shut out, barnes tossed a perfect first shot and came up light but carried the 8
pin late for the second strike.
"over time, i've grown to appreciate how many great international players have won
this event in their careers," said barnes, whose wife lynda won the world cup in
2005. "it was certainly on my bucket list to come here and win."
in the semifinal, barnes took a narrow 215-204 win in the first game before dazzling
the crowd with a 300-219 win to secure the win against ukraine's mykhaylo kalika.
on the women's side, guerrero won a hard-fought match against malaysia's li jane
sing, 2-1, to take the title. guerrero won the first game, 239-234, dropped the
second game, 257-243, and won the deciding game, 265-211.
"all my hard work and sacrifices for so many years are worth it now," guerrero said.
"this is a very historic tournament with a lot of great winners in the past. i
really wanted to be a part of that select group."
sin advanced to the title match with a 2-1 victory over team usa's brittni hamilton.
hamilton took the first game 235-181, but dropped the next two games, 236-234, and
213-204.
the world cup is considered one of the sport's most prestigious singles titles and
drew bowlers from 85 countries, making it the largest event in the sport in terms of
number of countries competing.
